Opportunities for students
Resources for supervisors and staff
The Environment and Geography employability team work with staff and students within the department to improve students’ employability prospects and staff research links.
The team encourage and facilitate the implementation of the Department Employability Principles for staff which support the drive to embed employability into the curriculum.
Angela Purdham - Industry Liaison Officer
- Oversight of placements for undergraduate and MSc students
- Liaises with industry about placements and job opportunities for students
- Organises networking events for students and employers
- Supports students in developing their employability skills
Jenny Pollard - Industry Liaison Officer
- Oversight of placements for SuBLIM students
- Liaises with industry about placements and job opportunities for SuBLIM students
- Supports SuBLIM students in developing their employability skills
Brett Sallach - Department Careers Employability Coordinator
- Embedding employability into the wider undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum
Marie Robson - Student Services Administrator
- Provides administrative support to the team in particular the weekly Employability newsletter and event administration
Faculty Careers Advisor
- Plans employability sessions in collaboration with the department CEC
- Delivers careers education, advice and guidance, 1:1 appointments and group sessions with students
- Both MSc and Undergraduate students can complete placements in industry: a placement year for undergrads or a dissertation with placement for MSc students.
- The Student Internship Bureau offers a number of short-term working opportunities in and around the University and York.
- A number of these are often specifically Environment and Geography related!
There are a number of volunteering opportunities:
- York Students in Schools: students work in local schools to offer support.
- St Nicholas Fields offer volunteer opportunities specifically for students on Wednesday afternoons during term time
- The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust often offers both long and short term volunteering opportunities.
- Other opportunities are available and advertised through the Careers and Placements - Volunteering team.
- A number of the York Community Projects planned for the 21/22 academic year have an academic focus. Applications will open in the autumn term.
York Strengths and York Award offer students the chance to reflect on their strengths and the skills they have developed over their degrees
A number of modules incorporate employability skills into their design (e.g. Flood Week)
- Student is given a list of work experience employers (supplied by NYBEP to each school).
- Student picks one and makes initial contact with employer to ask about details, dates etc
- If accepted by the Department, the student informs their school who will, in turn, alert NYBEP.
- Also, if accepted, we would expect this student work experience form to be completed by both the supervisor in the Department and the student, using this work experience guidance.
