PI | Principal Investigator | The lead researcher on a project, has overall responsibility |
Co-I/CoI | Co-Investigator | A key investigator on a project, does not have overall responsibility |
fEC | Full Economic Cost | The full cost of a research project, as calculated by UK universities using a set formula. UK research funders usually fund a proportion of the full cost of the research |
EOI | Expression of Interest | Some funding calls require applicants to submit an EOI in advance of the main deadline. The funder might be ensuring there are peer reviewers in the right research areas or sifting the number of applicants down to reduce the total number of full applications |
PDRA | Postdoctoral Research Associate | Research staff with a PhD (not academics); generally referred to as a 'Research Associate' at York |
PVC-R | Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research | The PVC-R has overall responsibility for the university's research portfolio. Sometimes we have to get approval from the PVC-R to undertake research projects |
UKRI | UK Research & Innovation | A UK non-departmental public body which brings together 7 disciplinary research councils, Research England, and Innovate UK. These bodies distribute UK taxpayer research and innovation funding |

BBSRC | Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council | A UKRI research council |
EPSRC | Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council | A UKRI research council |
ESRC | Economic and Social Research Council | A UKRI research council |
MRC | Medical Research Council | A UKRI research council |
NERC | Natural Environment Research Council | A UKRI research council |
STFC | Science and Technology Facilities Council | A UKRI research council |
IP | Intellectual Property | Intangible property that is the result of creativity, such as patents, copyrights, etc. |
KTP | Knowledge Transfer Partnership | Knowledge Transfer Partnerships encourage collaboration between businesses and universities in the United Kingdom |
DTP | Doctoral Training Partnership | DTPs are multi-institutional partnerships designed to train the next generation of world-class researchers |
CDT | Centre for Doctoral Training | CDTs are formed by a group of research organisations (universities and industry partners) combining research and expertise to support and train PhD students |
REF | Research Excellence Framework | An assessment of UK universities which takes place every 7 years |
