Making the Difference Awards May 2022

Winners

Adrian Gonzalez

Nominations:

  • Adrian has designed, kick started and lead our successful new SUBLiM MSc programme (we are curious and always learning). He has often gone out of his way to support overseas students and deal with their specific challenges in getting settled in (we are inclusive and embrace our diversity). Adrian has also stepped up to take on extra teaching and assessment and has covered for colleagues under difficult circumstances. He took on the Deputy Director role for Learning and Teaching as extra workload as a result of delays in new staff appointments (we are a friendly and helpful community). He's made a truly positive difference in our department!

Lucy Orange

Nominations:

  • Lucy is brilliant and always make time to support the PSS team, she has a heavy workload but always try to help as she can and it makes us feel supported, so I always try to do the same for her in return. She is always open to show and pass on everything she knows just to make everyone life easier and always try to support all the PSS team regardless of association, so if we are internal to E+G or External. I trust her completely as she is a very open and straight forward. E+G would be a very different department without her input.

Rebecca Reid Rodrigues

Nominations:

  • The Student Services Team have been under enormous pressure over the last 10 months. Bex joined the team in September and has worked so hard in pushing herself to learn as much and as quickly as she can, she takes feedback about her work and actively pushes to make herself better. The team have suffered low morale at times due to the workload and contact changing team - Bex always has a smile on her face and encourages the team to think positively and offers help and support to anyone who is struggling. She has transformed the student bulletin and has a huge part to play in the successful running of student events. Despite the workload she has volunteered to take part in committees so she can improve the department. Well done on all the hardwork Bex!

  • During the short time I have known Bex she has worked quietly and diligently as the linchpin of the Student Services team. The team has been going through a great deal of staff change but Bex is a calm and knowledgeable presence in the centre of the team making sure that the programme of assessments continues to be delivered with results released to the students within expected timeframes. In the absence of a line manager due to illness and lack of cover she was brilliant in working with myself as DM to set priorities for the team and ensure that the team (including two members of temporary staff) stayed on track. It was a mark of her general thoughtfulness that she organised leaving gifts for these staff. She is a real team player as well as being able to get her head down and work through a task that needs to be completed individually. She is a friendly and positive presence in the office. I have hugely valued her support in what has been a challenging time for the team.

  • Bex has been such a key member of the Student Services Team, independent of their successful MTD award last round. As one of the only remaining team members in the last six months of ongoing recruitment, Bex has shown her growth and learning capabilities by receiving a promotion early into her time with us.
Bex's attitude and friendliness is infectious. Despite having an incredibly high workload due to vacancies in the team, she has stepped up and helped her colleagues, going the extra mile to help with payments, field trips, and so much more. She is always there with a smile and a willingness to learn, teach, and help. Her incredible efforts into handing over her old role to Rachel, while learning and excelling in her new role, all while the team is new and not yet up to capacity, should not be understated and deserves to be rewarded independently from her previous team award.

Nominees

Roland Gehrels

Nominations:

  • Roland embodies all of our core values as our Head of Department. Having been here for a number of years I can honestly say that the sense of community we now enjoy as a department has never been stronger. It is no coincidence that these values have been developed under his leadership. He is also helping to steer the department in new and ever more ambitious ways, while at the same time striving for genuine inclusivity in all of our decisions. He takes staff welfare extremely seriously and is clearly committed to environmental sustainability, with changes to a number departmental practices and the recent appointment of a Director of Sustainability. The fact that the department has become an even better place to work after two of the most challenging years in our history is testimony to both his leadership skills and personal commitment and approach.

Marcy Melis

Nominations:

  • 2. We are a friendly and helpful community: Marcy is always quick to respond to queries and requests for help and support. Her direct and clear explanations, always in a friendly manner, make her a very helpful and valuable colleague and member of the team. An example: As a new member of staff I’ve had lots to learn. Paying for accommodation and navigating different work orders. On asking for help from Marcy she immediately schedules and Zoom call and runs through the procedures and paperwork- offering follow up sessions and training. She is an invaluable member of the team!

  • After helping me solve a financial issue, Marcy invite 2 of us to a mini zoom meeting, giving a comprehensive introduction about financial supports, rules, and procedures for PGRs in case we could in a proper time and position to seek the supports next time. I felt the professionalism as well as warmth from Marcy. Thank you, Marcy.

She's also enthusiastic and innovative when it comes to teaching, and definitely embodies the core value of being curious and always learning. She has undoubtedly made a difference for me.

PGR Student Services

Nominations:

  • Whenever I approached them, they were always friendly and helpful. It has been so lucky to be in a warm and supportive community. Thank you.

The whole Professional Services team

Nominations:

  • The professional services team are an invaluable asset to the department at all times, but over the last six months they have continued to provide this level of service despite being under huge internal pressure from loss of staff. Without this team the Department as a whole could not function, and whether or not it is individuals specific role or not, every member (past and present) has and is always willing to help provide answers and develop solutions. For a new member of staff this level of support is essential.
