  • BioArCh - founded in 2003 by the Archaeology, Biology and Chemistry departments. Based in the Environment Building:

  • PalaeoHub - superb facilities for imaging, materials testing, dissection, and computer analysis. The hub also houses the osteological and zooarchaeological teaching collections
  • Archaeology Data Service - the oldest digital repository of archaeology and heritage in the world, led by York’s Professor Julian Richards
  • Digital Archaeology and Heritage Lab based in King’s Manor. An ideal space to experiment with virtual reality, photogrammetry, photography, video games, RTI, and other technologies to investigate and disseminate archaeology and heritage data.

    • Access to state-of-the-art multimedia technologies and space to experiment with a variety of new technologies and techniques.
  • York Experimental Archaeology Research (YEAR) Centre - an on-campus outdoor experimental archaeology workspace. Experience first-hand what it would have been like to craft objects in the past using traditional techniques; for example, firing a pot, hafting an arrowhead, weaving baskets out of reeds.

Postgraduate-specific

  • The Humanities Resource Centre is a community hub for cross-disciplinary research, and acts as both a work and social space for postgraduate researchers and academic staff. The space is also open to postgraduate-taught students to a certain extent (it's fine to advertise this on PGT pages).

  • Internet Archaeology is the world’s first interactive peer-reviewed e-journal, created by the Centre for Digital Heritage.

Key message about York

  • Following the Dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII, the Manor was retained by the Crown and allocated to the Council of the North. It became the official residence of the President of the Council in 1561.
