Description

The rapid growth of open access over recent decades has created clear and transformative benefits for authors and readers of research publications. Open access helps maximise the dissemination of knowledge and ideas, discussions and findings by making journal articles, books and chapters freely available to a global public audience with reduced restrictions on use and re-use. The value of open access is today widely recognised - and in some cases mandated - by research funders, and has always been at the forefront of Open Research at York and the University’s responsibilities towards the wider societal benefits of research and our commitment to the public good

This session will provide an insightful and critical discussion of the realities and challenges facing open access today, with perspectives from authors, publishers and librarians. It will also offer a renewed call for optimism and advocacy with a brief exploration of alternative routes and collective funding models that can help us achieve a sustainable open access future beyond the current financial crisis in UK higher education.

Programme

The discussion will be hosted and introduced by Sarah Thompson who will also provide a brief overview of the University Library’s current priorities in our support for open access journal and book publishing at York. Kate Petherbridge will talk about White Rose University Press, our not-for-profit, in-house university press, and its commitment to open research and digital innovation through publishing. Professor Emma Marsden will offer her perspectives as an author and editor on the professional challenges and moral dilemmas of diamond open access, as discussed in a recent paper for the Dutch Journal of Applied Linguistics. Finally, Kevin Sanders will present the work of the Open Book Collective, which brings together publishers, service providers and libraries to secure the diversity and financial futures of open access book production and dissemination. The event will conclude with a Q&A and opportunity for dialogue between our speakers and attendees.
