Business system

A database system administered by IT Services and owned by a business area or IT Services which is used for administration of the institution.  For the purposes of this document this includes both business systems and information systems, though in practice a subset of these will be affected.

Corporate data

Data obtained from business systems, electronic files, and paper-based stores which relate to the administration of the institution.

Management Information

Information which is derived from and summarises corporate data

Data Warehouse

A access-controlled database administered by IT Services which contains corporate data curated and managed by business areas across the institution.

Management Information Gateway

A access-controlled web interface which contains all of the institution’s management information documents.

Object

A discrete and access-controlled data entity; in practice, this is a table or view in data warehouse, and an uploaded Tableau/Excel/PDF document in the Management Information Gateway.

Directory

A system which manages the identity and relationships between users, groups, and systems.

Authorisation Matrix

A method of displaying the potential and actual authorisation levels for a given user against a given object. Authorisation is multi-dimensional, so several 2D matrices can be created.

Tableau Project

An object in Tableau Server which contains one or more workbooks.

Tableau Workbook

An object created by Tableau Desktop and available to Server or Reader which contains one or more worksheets or dashboards.

Tableau Worksheet, Tableau View

An object created by Tableau Desktop which displays a single visualisation of data.

Tableau Dashboard

An object created by Tableau Desktop which displays several linked visualisations of data.

Business Area

A directorate or sub-team within a directorate that deals with a discrete area of the University’s administration.

Information Question

An informal notation used to describe a data request, e.g. "Can you show me the trend over time[1] of the gender split[2] for our applicants[3] by department and programme[4]"?

Perspective

A viewpoint used to interrogate a data set - normally item [1] in the information question, after the word 'can you'.

Facet

The specific analysis being used in a perspective, such as gender split or research income per academic - normally item [2] in the information question, after the word 'of'.

Thematic Area

A method of categorising similar activities from different business areas, using the nature of activity instead of the organisational unit. Normally item [3] in the information question, after the word 'for'.

Breakdown

The 'slice and dice' dimensions used to display data in increasingly granular portions, such as by department or programme. Normally item [4] in the information question after the word 'by'.
