UG FAQs - Personal Issues
1. How can I find out who my personal supervisor is?
Information about your personal supervisor will be provided in an email near the beginning of your first term and will be displayed in your e:vision account. If in doubt, reception will also be able to tell you.
2. I need to discuss something with my personal supervisor, can I arrange a meeting?
Yes. You are free to contact your personal supervisor at any time during your academic study to discuss any issues that are bothering you. Your supervisor should be your first point of call for any issues relating to your studies. Email your supervisor and ask to arrange a time to meet, if needed. Separately to this, the Department will arrange termly meetings between you and your supervisor to discuss your progress and any other issues you are facing. Please check the UG Handbook for further information UG Handbook - Your Supervisor
3. I have a personal problem that is affecting my studies, what should I do?
Contact your personal supervisor immediately to arrange a meeting with them. They will be able to advise you on what to do in relation to your studies, and may also suggest that you also speak to other relevant University support services. You may need to consider a claim for exceptional circumstances, and your supervisor can advise whether this is appropriate for your situation.
4. I have a personal problem that is not affecting my academic studies, but I would still like help with it?
Your College Welfare Officer or Student Support Services would be the best people to speak to. Depending on the issue, they may possibly refer you to other additional support.
5. I have an ongoing illness that is affecting my studies, what should I do?
Discuss this with your personal supervisor. You only need to give as much detail as feels comfortable, but it is important that the department is made aware of the situation so that it can provide the right help and support in terms of your studies. If you need an extension on a piece of coursework, this can be discussed. You may need to consider a claim for exceptional circumstances, and your supervisor can advise whether this is appropriate for your situation or whether some other course of action is needed.
6. My illness or personal issues means that I need to take time off, what do I do?
In certain circumstances, it is possible to apply for an extended leave of absence (LOA). This is for a maximum period of one year. Should you need to consider this, please begin by discussing with your personal supervisor. For more information on this, please see the University pages on leave of absence https://www.york.ac.uk/staff/supporting-students/issues/academic/taught/loa-taught/
7. Do you think you are being harassed, or are on the receiving end of inappropriate behaviour?
If this is occurring within the Department of Psychology, you should report this to either your Personal Supervisor, or if necessary to the Chair of the Board of Studies. If this occurring outside of the Department, your College Welfare Officer or Student Support Services would be the best people to speak to in the first instance.
8. Are you having specific problems with your personal supervisor?
