Social Psychology and Individual Differences

What is it that makes each person unique, or to put it another way what makes each individual different? This strand addresses these questions by considering how we think of and interact with others, our enduring individual characteristics. In doing so we will also ask what are the limits of normal human experience and behaviour, and what are the causes of, and potential therapies for mental illness?

Like the other core topic modules, the Social Psychology and Individual Differences modules run through Years 1 and 2 and is in Semester 1 in both years. In each year, the module is split into four teaching blocks covering different topics. These blocks are often taught by different members of staff.

Year 1

Topics covered in Year 1 include the self, group relationships, prosocial behaviour. structure and  mental health issues.

  • Block 1: Social Relationships - Dr Sally Quinn
  • Block 2: Mental Health Issues 1- Dr Gavin Phillips
  • Block 3: Self and Others - Dr Thomas Davies
  • Block 4: Mental Health Issues 2- Dr Gavin Phillips
  • Year 2

In Year 2 we begin by examining how our personality is developed and how it modify our responses to everyday situations. We will then look in detail at interpersonal communication – does this close analysis give away subtle clues to our inner thoughts and feelings? We will then look at aspects such as authority, conformity and persusaion before finishing the module covering the topic of intelligence when you will learn about intelligence testing and the problems that are associated with different methods.

  • Block 1: Personality - Dr Sally Quinn
  • Block 2: Language and Communication - Dr Maurice Waddle
  • Block 3: Psychology and Society - Dr Cade McCall
  • Block 4: Intelligence - Dr Amanda Hickey
