Lab Sustainability Tip of the Week 💡

Fridges, cold stores and freezers are highly energy intensive and can account for up to 5% of total laboratory energy consumption.

Some of this energy-intensive space is used for storing unclaimed, unwanted or obsolete samples.

So, please help us to maximise the cold storage by disposing of your samples promptly at the end of your experiment, labelling your samples adequately and using our sample and material tracking log to minimise the need to purchase additional fridge and freezer space.

Green Impact Awards

The labs were awarded Platinum in the 2023 NUS Green Impact Awards, improving on the Gold award received the previous year, and we are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our laboratories.  See the lab handbook and notices in the laboratories for sustainability tips.

Purchasing Requests

If you wish to request the purchase of laboratory chemicals, consumables and equipment, please email environment-technicians@york.ac.uk providing a list of the items you require. Please include:

  • the product name
  • supplier (see below)
  • product code
  • quantity required
  • a workorder/grant code for them to be charged to.

Please note that the technical staff can only purchase from approved university suppliers using the YEP system, so if you wish to purchase from a particular supplier, please check with us first to confirm that they are on the list of approved suppliers.

We will email you when a delivery has arrived and packages will be available to collect from the corridor outside the Technicians’ office.  Please inform the Technical staff if you are expecting delivery of any live organisms that might require special handling upon arrival.

Please label new chemicals with your name and the date received and add them to our Quartzy chemical inventory
