Resources for supervisors and staff
The Environment and Geography careers and employability team work with staff and students within the department to improve students’ employability prospects and staff research links.
Jenny Pollard - Industry Liaison Officer
- Oversight of placements for undergraduate and MSc students
- Liases with industry about placements and job opportunities for students
- Organises networking events for students and employers
Tamsyn Kiss - Employability Assistant
- Supports students to improve employability skills
- Promotes and manages placements for undergraduate and MSc students
- Assists the Industry Liaison Officer in planning and managing employability events
Promotes the Placement Year Mentor programme within the department
Brett Sallach - Department Careers Employability Coordinator
- Embedding employability into the wider undergraduate curriculum
Rob Mills - Module Convenor for Dissertation with placement
- Academic lead for module
Nyree Hardie - Faculty Careers Advisor
- Plans employabilitysessions in collaboration with the department CEC
- Delivers careers education, advice and guidance, 1:1 appointments and group sessions with students (bookable via Handshake)
- Both MSc and Undergraduate students can complete placements in industry: a placement year for undergrads or a dissertation with placement for MSc students.
- The Student Internship Bureau offers a number of short-term working opportunities in and around the University and York.
- A number of these are specifically Environment and Geography related!
There are a number of volunteering opportunities:
- York Students in Schools: students work in local schools to offer support.
- St Nicholas Fields offer volunteer opportunities specifically for students on Wednesday afternoons during term time
- The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust often offers both long and short term volunteering opportunities.
- Other opportunities are available and advertised through the Careers and Placements - Volunteering team.
- A number of the York Community Projects planned for the 20/21 academic year have an academic focus. Applications will open in the autumn term.
York Strengths and York Award offer students the chance to reflect on their strengths and the skills they have developed over their degrees
A number of modules incorporate employability skills into their design (e.g. Flood Week)
