The following 'boilerplate' text might be useful for some grant applications that require a broad description of the University/Department. This text was created for EC grants in the Summer of 2019:
'Founded in 1963 on principles of excellence, equality and opportunity for all, the University of York is a dynamic, research-intensive university and a delivering curiosity-driven and action-orientated research for public good. A member of the elite Russell Group of universities. The , the University has over 30 academic departments and research centres and a student body of over 18,000. The University of York is an active member of the European Research Community, being involved in 14 FP7 and 78 Horizon 2020 research projects, either as partner or coordinator19,000. The Department of Environment and Geography was established in 1992 and has a strong interdisciplinary approach across the interface between natural, physical and social sciences. The Department has grown to include over 30 40 academic staff members , 15 and 20 postdoctoral researchers, with over half a dozen technicians. The Department has established an international reputation for excellence and innovation at the forefront of in challenge-led environmental research , with 96% of our research being internationally recognised (Research Excellence Framework, 2014). The Department of Environment and Geography is augmented by the embedding of the and impact, and is ranked 2nd for impact in Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences (Times Higher Education REF 2021 ranking). The York centre of the Stockholm Environment Institute , - the independent, international research organisation committed to the implementation of practices supportive of global sustainable development - is embedded within the Department.'
