As part of performance management, staff should be having regular discussions with their line manager regarding development. 

There are a number of courses that all staff can attend to further their skills and training. These are advertised in the departmental newsletter, but also on the HR webpages here.

Here is the list of mandatory training that you must complete when you start at the university.

Beyond that, there is lots of training available to staff, most of which is accessed by the Learning Management System (LMS).

Mentoring and coaching


The university also has a number of mentoring and coaching schemes.

All new staff should receive information on a mentor. Email Environment HR <environment-hr@york.ac.uk> if you haven't.panel
  • Your line manager should help you identify a suitable mentor, if necessary
  • PhD students and ECRs have organised a mentoring  scheme to aid career development. Contact the PhD reps for more information.
  • Undergraduates have a buddy scheme where stage 2-4 students can buddy up with a stage 1 student. Email Chair of Board of Studies for more info and advertise to your supervisees.
